Country: Australia
Organization: Australian Red Cross
Registration deadline: 02 Sep 2015
Starting date: 03 Sep 2015
Ending date: 04 Sep 2015

We're pleased to offer three dynamic, two-day workshops that deliver the essential elements of participatory assessments, program design, monitoring, evaluation, and learning from programs.

The training lays out a step by step process starting with how to engage key stakeholders: the people directly affected by the project, and the people you need to influence to make it happen. Then we identify ways to build participation into program design, planning, monitoring and evaluation - with practical tools at each step.

The result? You'll be much more confident to undertake assessments and design, monitor and learn from programs. You'll be able to make sound decisions based on solid planning principles, especially in emergency situations.

Part I: Essentials of Assessment and Analysis

If you start your program with a pre-determined goal, you're likely to miss the vital step of identifying and analysing the options available. This makes managing your program more difficult and increases your risk of failure.

This workshop guides you through the information and decision-making processes in developing a program. You'll gain processes and tools to undertake assessment and analysis, giving you the best options for your program design.

Course aims:

  • Build your understanding of the role and dimensions of assessment and analysis in a humanitarian or development situation;
  • Consider options for addressing a situation and prepare the groundwork for program design through the use of evidence;
  • Experience participatory processes you can use when undertaking program assessment and analysis.

This course will cover:

  • What is meant by assessment and analysis and why bother?
  • Why participatory processes?
  • Key factors to think about when doing assessment and analysis?
  • Principles: why are they important and how do they help?
  • Stage 1: What is the problem and situation?
  • Stage 2: What are the benefits of tackling the problem and for whom?
  • Stage 3: What are our options? How do you identify them?
  • Stage 4: What are we choosing to do and why?
  • Stage 5: The players and their contribution
  • Links to design, monitoring, evaluation, reporting and learning

Part II: Essentials of Program Design

Right, you've set some achievable goals. Now let's work out how to deliver them and keep them on track.

Our experienced facilitators will guide you through the principles of planning. You'll get a solid grounding in theories of change, logic modelling and results-based plans, and why reflection makes for better planning.

Course aims:

  • Deepen your understanding of the processes used in program and project planning;
  • Experience participatory processes you can use when undertaking program design.

This course will cover:

  • The principles of planning
  • Theory of change
  • Reflection
  • Planning for implementation and developing a results-based project plan for project management.

Part III: Essentials of Monitoring, Evaluation, Reporting and Learning

Start evaluating your program as soon as you start your program. This course will help you pinpoint the information you need and design the best ways to get it and use it to improve your program - while it's running, not in hindsight.

Course aims:

  • Explore and understand key considerations for preparing and implementing an M&E plan;
  • Demystify M&E and lift your confidence to develop and implement an M&E plan;
  • Experience participatory processes you can use when undertaking program design.

This course will cover:

  • Framing the evaluation: how do you clarify the reasons you're doing an evaluation? Who are the players? What questions do you want/need to answer and when? What is the role of logic models?
  • Gathering the data - how do we answer the questions?
  • Understanding and causality: analysing the data to be able to answer questions
  • Reporting and supporting use: Building an evidence culture in projects
